Onychomycosis (from the Greek onyx – nail, and mykes – fungus) is defined as a fungal infection of the nail. Diagnosis is primarily clinical, based on the visual appearance of the affected nails. However, to confirm the diagnosis, the dermatologist may recommend laboratory investigations, including fungal culture.

Onychomycosis can be transmitted through:

Sharing socks or footwear with an infected person
Using non-sterile manicure and pedicure tools
Public locker rooms, swimming pools, and saunas

While both fingernails and toenails can be affected, toenails are more commonly involved.

For some patients,nail fungal infections are primarily a cosmetic concern,and they seek tratament for aesthetic reasons.However,fungal infections can create entry points for bacterial infections.The initial fungal infection may also spread to other nails and interdigital spaces, causing itching.unpleasant odor, and pain.

Oral antifungal medications prescribed by a dermatologist
Topical antifungal therapy to enhance systemic treatment

One of the most effective local treatments is the use of 1064 nm ND:YAG laser therapy, which thermally destroys the fungus.
