Dermatoscopy – Accurate and Non-Invasive Skin Diagnosis

Dermatoscopy is a quick, non-invasive method for diagnosing skin lesions using a specialized tool called a dermatoscope. This diagnostic technique allows for detailed examination of skin structures and significantly increases the accuracy of early detection of skin cancer, especially melanoma.

The interpretation of dermatoscopic structures is based on a two-step algorithm:

Differentiation between pigmented and non-pigmented lesions
Distinction between benign and malignant (melanoma) lesions

An important evaluation tool is the ABCDE rule, which includes key clinical criteria:

What Does the ABCDE Rule Mean?

A – Asymmetry: One half of the mole does not match the other
B – Border: Irregular or poorly defined edges
C – Color: Uneven color or multiple shades within the same lesion
D – Diameter: Larger than 6 mm or increasing in size
E – Evolution: Changes over time in size, shape, or color
